Bringing the Woohoo to Culture

You wake up in the morning and find yourself forcefully self-motivating to get out bed. Why? Work. And your excitement levels are at an all-time low.

Have you ever felt like this? We sure have at some point in our lives, but because we’ve felt this, we believe that there is always a way for businesses and people to find or regain their Woohoo – bringing their best self to work.

The importance of organisational culture isn’t anything new, but what we will start to see more and more of is a shift in how employees want to be treated.

‘Lost your Woohoo’ is a term we use at The Woohoo Co, there could be several reasons why someone has lost their Woohoo. Not only intrinsic or internal reasons, but there are certain situations where an organisation can have an impact on someone losing their woohoo. This may happen by overpromoting someone in a role, just due to their years of service and without the proper training to set them up for success or putting people in positions that they find no satisfaction in.

Organisations who do this will find that team members may be out of flow. Causing a change in attitude, delayed work, lack of motivation and less connection with others. Promoting someone due to their long tenure is a way of acknowledging the person, however, your organisation could be doing more harm than good without the appropriate upskilling and investment in them, to help the person thrive in the role.

Putting people in positions that aren't a match with their current skillset and without proper guidance or support, with an expectation of them picking up the work may also result in people losing their Woohoo.

Going beyond this and taking a holistic view of the organisation, the importance of building an organisational culture that allows people to bring their best selves to work is crucial. Policies and cultural engagement strategies such as flexible working conditions, mentor matching, training opportunities, monthly game nights, etc, can help boost overall morale within the organisation.

“To be successful and thrive you can’t afford not to invest in people, enabling a workforce to grow is where the latent capability lies. Shifting the culture and behaviours to support multiplication is no mean feat, it takes a combination of emotional intelligence, strategy, authentic engagement and empowerment. The Woohoo Co. brought this sophisticated approach to our task, delivering results far beyond expectation.

Outdated policies which aren’t progressive and can harm an organisation's culture may be another factor that can affect an employee's motivation to work.

To further highlight this point recent research commissioned by Officeworks found that almost one in three Australian employees (32%) who could work from home don’t because their organisation doesn’t have a formal WFH policy in place. 92% of survey respondents stated that a WFH policy will bring better work-life balance and in turn result in an increase in workplace productivity. So we must ask, why are organisations opposed to change that could potentially bolster the morale and productivity of their employees?

When an organisation learns to adapt, giving more space for employees to bring their best selves to work, the organisation should start to see positive change. After all it’s all about people.
